A NAIST delegation visited Malaysia from December 1st to 6th, 2017.
As part of NAIST’s mission to further expand our international student population, participating in study-abroad fairs is an essential recruiting activity. Prof. Michiko Inoue (Graduate School of Information Science), Adjunct Prof. Masako Shinjoh (Graduate School of Biological Sciences), Prof. Yukiharu Uraoka (Graduate School of Materials Science), Mr. Toru Sumita (Section Chief, International Students Section of International Affairs Division), Dr. Sachi Ando (Director, Division for Global Education), and two Malaysian students (Mr. Saranpal Singh and Mr. Muhammad Arif) participated in the “Study in Japan Fair” that was held in Kuala Lumpur on December 2 and 3, 2017. NAIST alumni from Malaysia also joined our booth. According to the Japan Student Services Organization (or JASSO), a total of 3,043 people attended this year’s fair. At the information booth, more than 70 attendees who were interested in science and technology graduate schools discussed possibilities for their education with NAIST representatives and received detailed information concerning our educational programs, research activities, scholarships, student life at NAIST, and more.

On December 4, 2017, the NAIST delegates, including Prof. Shinjoh, Prof. Uraoka, DGE Director Ando, and the students visited University of Malaya’s Faculty of Science for a meeting with Prof. Zanariah Abdulla (Dean), Prof. Ismail Yusoff (Deputy Dean for Postgraduate Programs), and other faculty members, discussing our active educational and research collaboration and future possible developments. Following this, an information session was held, where NAIST delegates provided information on its educational programs, research activities, internship opportunities, study-in-Japan experiences, and career support to the participating students. Our alumni, Dr. Nur Ardiyana Rejab, currently Senior Lecturer of the Faculty, shared her experiences, such as her life-changing decision to come to NAIST, her life in Nara, and her career path.

DGE Director Ando visited Universiti Sains Malaysia, School of Biological Sciences, on December 5, 2017. The visit consisted of meetings with Assoc. Prof. Yahya Mat Arip (Deputy Director for Research, Postgraduate Programs, and Networking), Assoc. Prof. Ahmad Ghazali (Deputy Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, and Alumni Relations), Assoc. Prof. Rashidah Abdul Rahim (Program Manager for Biotechnology & Microbiology), and other faculty members to discuss education and research collaboration. Then, DGE Director Ando held an information session for students interested in studying at NAIST, followed by a meeting with a group of prospective students who will be interning at NAIST in January 2018.

As of November 1, 2017, there are 264 international students at NAIST, and 37 of them are from Malaysia. Among these Malaysian students, there are 16 University of Malaya and 17 Universiti Sains Malaysia alumni. There is a long, active history of research and education collaboration between our faculty members and Malaysian faculty members and researchers. This visit is expected to further develop educational and research opportunities for students and faculty members.
