NAIST's First Overseas Education Collaborative Office; Opening of NAIST Indonesia Office (April 1, 2016)

2016/05/12

On April 1, 2016, NAIST established its first overseas office in Bogor, Indonesia.

Since its establishment in 1991, NAIST has accepted over 100 students from Indonesia in alignment with our globalization strategies. At present, there are 37 doctoral graduates from NAIST that are active faculty members and researchers in prestigious universities in Indonesia. The NAIST alumni community in Indonesia is very organized and has led to the forming of "NAIST-Indonesia Alumni."

NAIST has been closely involved in activities with Indonesia, including sending faculty and staff members to introduce our cutting-edge research, giving lectures, supporting student exchange, joint research and supporting our graduates' continued research.

Establishment of the NAIST Indonesia Office is also a central idea stated in the Top Global University Project, a flagship project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (MEXT) to strengthen international competitiveness.

A delegation headed by NAIST President Naotake Ogasawara and Executive Director/Vice-president Mikio Kataoka visited Indonesia to attend the office signing ceremony on April 8 at the Alumni Building in Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), which was followed by an opening ceremony. The next day, the NAIST delegation held a meeting with NAIST alumni to discuss the management and function of the office, as well as possibilities of further developing research and education collaboration.

The NAIST-Indonesia Office was created to strengthen the institute's international presence with the objectives of improving recruiting and selection of Indonesian students, furthering collaboration with partner institutions, and promoting collaborative research with NAIST Alumni in Indonesia. However, our vision for the office's future includes it serving as an Asian hub to further connect NAIST to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other cooperating countries and institutions.
