NAIST Indonesia Office Director delivered online lecture for biotechnology students of Universitas Gadjah Mada(2020/10/24)
On October 24, 2020, Professor Masashi Kawaichi, the Director of the NAIST Indonesia Office, delivered an online lecture titled "My career as a scientist" for biotechnology students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of the NAIST's Indonesian partner institutions. This event was organized by the UGM Center for Biotechnology Research.
Prof. Kawaichi introduced his experiences as a researcher and faculty member, incorporating a variety of episodes and lessons learned from both successes and failures, and encouraged UGM students aspiring to pursue careers as scientists.
The lecture, which began at 8:00 a.m. Western Indonesia time (10:00 a.m. JST), was attended by 39 UGM biotechnology students, young lecturers, and representatives of the Center for Biotechnology Research. It was followed by a lively question and answer session where participants exchanged various ideas and opinions.
Participants commented that they were inspired and motivated by the lecture given by Prof. Kawaichi. Some of them also made specific requests such as for advice on time management for Indonesian researchers who have to handle with teaching in addition to research and activities in the local community, advice for non-traditional, returning students who are aspiring to become scientists, having left their previous specialties/careers, and other pinpoint advice, etc.
While travel between Japan and Indonesia has been restricted throughout the COVID-19 crisis, the promotion of education and research exchange including remote online lectures and meetings was suggested at the Indonesian NAIST Alumni Association (INAA) gathering held in September, and this lecture was the first activity as part of this effort.
