NAIST participated in the Virtual Study in Japan Fair for South American prospective students

On March 11 and 12, a Virtual Study in Japan Fair for South American prospective students organized by Tsukuba University was held online as part of the "Study in Japan Overseas Base Collaboration Promotion Project (South America)" commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Previously, the travel time required to reach South American countries (1-2 days) limited participation, but the online fair enabled us to attend the fair, set up virtual NAIST booth on the Airmeet platform, and participate in the event as if we were on-site talking directly to the students. Dr. Masako Shimamoto, Global Engagement Officer of the Division for Global Education began the event with an overview of NAIST to the visitors, and followed this with individual consultations responding to any question or inquiry.
A total of 77 participants from Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Ecuador visited NAIST's virtual booth over the two days. Many questions were raised regarding suitable laboratories for individual research topics, and participants demonstrated an intense interest in information science, especially in areas such as robotics and AI, as well as biological science. We were surprised to hear that some participants have been learning Japanese from the local people of Japanese descent and from their conversations, it seems that young people in South American countries are quite interested in studying in Japan.
