On February 17th, Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) held a briefing session of the Overseas Staff Development Training Program.
This program began in 2007 for the improvement of international education and general planning skills to promote systematic globalization in graduate school education through language training, workplace visitation, debate, etc. at overseas universities.
This year, NAIST sent 1 administrative staff member to Hawaii Tokai International College (HTIC) and University of Hawaii of West Oahu (UHWO) from Novmber.30th to December.20th for the senior training program.
She participated in the practical English training program and learned about student and faculty member recruiting methods, and the faculty evaluation system through job shadowing in offices such as Human Resources at HTIC and Student Services at UHWO, and meeting with numerous administrative staff there.
In her report, the staff member explained what she learned through the program, including things such as differences between American and Japanese society and culture that set a different tone for administration, and insurance and legislative system characteristics and their influence on administration policy creation in America. She also gave an explanation of the dissemination of education-focused research at American institutions and university planning and strategy, including student recruiting strategies.
Finally, the staff member encouraged younger staff members to actively participate in the program in order to further assist with globalization at NAIST, where the number of the international students is increasing every year.
In the following question and answer session, Executive Director Mikio Kataoka and younger staff members actively inquired about specific details of the visitations.
Finally, the Executive Director Kiyoshi Nakajima gave encouraging remarks on how he hopes the trainee will utilize the valuable experiences she acquired through this training and try to further improve her skills, successfully ending this briefing session.
