NAIST was established in October 1991 as a graduate university that promotes cutting-edge research, develops human resources who contribute to industrial and social activities through advanced education based on research results, and contributes to the advancement and development of science and technology. For more than 30 years since its establishment, NAIST has disseminated cutting-edge research results in the fields of science and technology both domestically and internationally and has produced many outstanding human resources. Building on the education and research achievements of the Graduate Schools of Information Science, Biological Sciences, and Materials Science, the three graduate schools were integrated into the Graduate School of Science and Technology in 2018 to enhance further our world-level advanced research and education based on its outstanding results. In the Graduate School of Science and Technology, in addition to the three programs in Information Science, Bioscience, and Materials Science, two fusion programs, the Data Science Program and the Digital Green-innovation Program, have been established within these original three areas. By allowing students to choose a program that suits them, we are strengthening the development of human resources with a broad range of cutting-edge knowledge, advanced expertise, and a bird's-eye view of society as a whole, which are required by the today's world.

In recent years, there have been remarkable changes in social conditions and the natural environment surrounding humankind, such as the development of artificial intelligence technology, longevity and energy issues, and climate change due to global warming. In order to flexibly address these issues, our graduate school has established a system of close and organic collaboration among its diverse constituents. From April 2024, the Center for Digital Green-innovation will be located within the graduate school and a new Medilux Research Center will be established within the graduate school as well. I strongly hope that new traditions will be built under these strengthened education and research systems.
