From August 15 to August 20, 2024, a NAIST delegation consisting of faculty and staff, headed by Dr. Kazuhiro Shiozaki (President) and Dr. Jun Ohta (Vice President for Research and International Affairs) visited educational and research organizations and Japanese embassies in Thailand and Indonesia. One of the main purposes of this visit was to hold a kick-off symposium for Thai NAIST Alumni Association, the second alumni association of NAIST, in Bangkok, and the another was to participate the signing ceremony for the double degree program between NAIST and Kasetsart University which will expand both the eligible courses and program fields.
On August 15, the Thai NAIST Alumni Association Kick-off Symposium was held in Bangkok. About 10% of NAIST's 1400 international student graduates are from Thailand and many of them are active in Thai companies and academic organizations. This is the second NAIST alumni association, following the one in Indonesian NAIST Alumni Association. After the opening remarks by President Shiozaki, Dr. Yuttakonkit Yuttakon, president of Thai NAIST Alumni Association, greeted everyone while explaining establishment of the alumni association and touching on his memories of NAIST.
On August 16, the delegation visited Dr. Chongrak Wachrinrat, the president of Kasetsart University (Thailand) and discussed the achievements of the universities' collaborations. Prof. Minoru Okada in charge of the double degree program between NAIST and Kasetsart University explained the expansion of program from only for the master's course of Division of Material Science to both master's and doctoral course of Division of Materials Science and Information Science. The signing ceremony was then concluded with the signing of the agreement by the two presidents, which will further promote exchange between the two universities.
Moreover, in the afternoon on the same day, the delegation visited Mr. Masato Otaka, Ambassador of Embassy of Japan in Thailand. They had a discussion on the importance of academic and educational exchange with excellent universities in Thailand, and Ambassador Otaka expressed his strong expectations for NAIST to develop future exchanges with Thailand.
The delegation moved to Indonesia and participated Indonesian NAIST Alumni Association (INAA) Reunion Meeting in Jakarta on August 18. INAA was founded in 2013, taking on the role of fostering connections and strengthening relationships within the alumni community and coordination between NAIST and alumni based in NAIST Indonesia Office, located in Alumni Building of IPB University from 2016. Dr. Shiozaki and his delegation were welcomed by Dr. Berry Juliandi, President of the Alumni Association, and other members of the alumni association. Prof. Yasumasa Bessho, Director of Division of Biological Science and also Director of NAIST Indonesia Office, introduced collaboration between NAIST and Indonesia and the meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere. In the afternoon, they joined an excursion to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah for deeper communication with alumni.
In the morning of August 19, the delegation visited Dr. Arif Satria, the president of IPB University, one of NAIST's international partners. Dr. Arif Satria expressed his gratitude for the collaboration between NAIST and IPB University which makes significant contributions to the development of education and research at IPB University. Then, Dr. Shiozaki noted that IPB University is an important partner for NAIST and showed his appreciation to Dr. Berry Juliandi, Dean of IPB University, for his contributions as the president of INAA.
In the afternoon on the same day, the delegation visited the Research Organization of Life Sciences and Environment, BRIN. After an introduction of the latest research achievements, there was a lively exchange of views on the possibility of joint research. Following this visit, in the morning of August 20, the delegation had an opportunity to visit Dr. Laksana Tri Handoko, Chairman of BRIN to discuss future collaboration between NAIST and BRIN including a possibility to sign the agreement for screening and receiving Indonesian students.
Finally, the delegation visited Mr. Yasushi Masaki, Ambassador of Embassy of Japan in Indonesia. They exchanged opinions on the acceptance of students from Indonesia and the activities of the alumni association, and Ambassador Masaki expressed his appreciation and expectations for the proactive efforts of NAIST.
Throughout this significant visit, the president himself lead delegation to Thailand and Indonesia. This visit deepened the partnerships between NAIST, alumni and educational/research institutions in Thailand and Indonesia and contributed to NAIST's overseas presence as well.
